How do u get a gimp picture as your desktop background?

Try saving it in . jpg format

[File] [Save As] - Expand Select File Type and choose JPEG Image

Then give it a name (No need for extension) - Save as JPEG dialog will open - choose save

Then go to file - right click and select Set As Background
