gimp is the default image editor.

what linux distro are you using ?
gimp suppose to come with the package(linux os) when you installed it
or is the linux pre-installed on your computer ?
either way, if you download the gimp through synaptic package manager, it will be the default editor unless you have other image editor installed.
if you only have one , which is gimp,, it will be the default editor either you downloaded it after linux installation or through "synaptic package manger"
