The Blender website should be a great source. Explore the website. There are forums, tutorials, external links. There is even a gallery where users can post their works and get you inspired.
Additionally, I have found a perfect website for you in the links section - BlenderNewbies.com.
By the way, the home page of blender is http://www.blender.org/.

Try this site( http://otothecleaner.free.fr/tutorials/tutorials.html ) he has a great tutorial on creating a lowpoly character. But for creating High or normal poly human, use a reference picture in the front and side and model it from there.
