Can the book, "The Essential Blender : Guide to 3D Creation with the Open Source Suite Blender", teach a newbie like me how to use blender. Does it teach the basics and everything I need to know to start using Blender? Please tell me. Thanks.

The Essential Blender is a good book. Sometimes it helps to have 2 (or in my case) even three.
YouTube has a ton of tutorials:

that's a great book. another good one is "Bounce, Tumble, and Splash!: Simulating the Physical World with Blender 3d" and "Introducing Character Animation with Blender 3d"
also try online tutorials on youtube, and totallyblended.com
