How do I set Gimp as the default picture viewer in linux?

I use the Linux operating system on my Acer Aspire One and have installed Gimp to edit photos. I would like to set Gimp as the default to open photos but can't find out how to do this. Can anyone help please? Thanks for your time.

gimp is the default image editor.

what linux distro are you using ?
gimp suppose to come with the package(linux os) when you installed it
or is the linux pre-installed on your computer ?
either way, if you download the gimp through synaptic package manager, it will be the default editor unless you have other image editor installed.
if you only have one , which is gimp,, it will be the default editor either you downloaded it after linux installation or through "synaptic package manger"

Try right-clicking an image, choosing Properties, clicking the "Open With" tab, and choosing GIMP as the application.

I'm currently running the GNOME version of Linux Mint, so things may vary between it, the KDE desktop, the XFCE desktop, and so on.

right click on the image, choose open with. . . . ,

click on 'other'

a box should open

navigate to gimp and highlight it

check the box for 'remember application association for this file type'

click ok

this is in kde4, gnome should be roughly the same

(i use kde4 and gimp)

(@gary - not true, gimp comes pre-installed on mine but all images open with gwenview by default - the association needs to be changed)
