Photoshop is mainly for image editing.
Photoshop Elements is a slimmed down version of Photoshop. It allows you to create slideshows with special effects, with background music, exports slideshows to DVD or to a video for playback on your computer or to share online.

Photoshop Elements is ALSO for editing Photographs. Elements does not have "curves", LAB, paths, the pin tool, smart objects, editable filters, to name most. Took two very expensive online courses (beginners and intermediate) in Photoshop and during the 12 weeks of class, that which I listed was not even mentioned in passing except the smart objects. Photoshop is a professional level editing program. If you are not a professional in this field, then Elements is all you need. The ability to create slideshows, web galleries is secondary to the program. And, BTW, the burning to DVD is not the type that can be played as a movie in a DVD player. Photoshop Premier Elements, a video editing program, is required for that purpose.
