if it's the problem I'm thinking of, it's not fuzzy, it's pixelated.... This is a viewport config problem. Open up Max, and go into customize/User interface. Then go into the viewports tab, and go down to "configure driver". In there there will be a series of check boxes on the bottom, (I'm sorry I don't have the software on this laptop right now, so I can't be TOO exact.....) there are boxes for match bitmap... 3 different check boxes at the bottom... I think 2 say match bitmap, and the other is like antialiased lines or something. Either way, just check all 3 of those, and ALSO MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR BITMAP SIZED UP TO THE HIGHEST THEY CAN GO instead of 256 or whatever they are by default. Once this is done, apply it, close the window, and restart max for those settings to take effect.
I run into this problem all the time with my students, I teach 3D Studio Max online.
Take a look at my website:

I am not a flash guy, so my web design is somewhat poor... I can't figure out how to get a scroll bar working... but if you navigate to the "about" page, there is full information on what I do, and what I can do for you.
oh, and here's my portfolio site if you wanna see some of my own work.:

Hope to hear from you!
