Well Maya seems to be more used for films and 3ds Max is used more for game design.
They are both nice tools and if you know how to use one of those you'll easily figure out how to use another.
Also 3ds max is cheaper and if you don't really need some extreme and expensive graphics I'd stick to Max.
There's also opensource solution called Blender which is one of the best tools that I know and also Lightwave which is basically my favourite.
But as I told you that's about your personal preference and if you're starting with 3D Max is the good point to start with.
