How to open animation on gimp without it going pixalized?

When you download a file which is an animated image and then you open it in gimp how do you stop it going all pixalized when you add anything different, whether its adding new text or pasting another image on there. The actual file doesnt go funny its just other stuff. Ive tried saving the files in JPG and GIF but no success so far. Any ideas?

if you opened an animated gif file, the resolution in gif would be low 256 colors, and possibly limiting you to those colors and resolution,
you could try to save copy of file as xcf gimp file then edit, or create new xcf file and import gif frames,

if animation is not originally gif, could be added coding from video or converter changing output
